Net Free Zones
Created / Updated on Monday 2nd of November 2015

The ALP policy statement prior to the 2015 election stated :-
' establish three net free fishing zones in north & central Queensland'.

This has now been legislated and the areas were closed to netting on 1st November 2015. Affected commercial fishers have been contacted and some form of 'compensation' arranged via Government protocols. The closures do not affect commercial trawling, crabbing or line fishing and do not affect recreational activities.

All action on these closures will be finalized by the end of December 2015.

Three more commitments are still to be finalized

  • Adopt a fisheries resource allocation policy based on maximizing economic value.

  • Develop a charter fishing action plan.

  • Extend the Marine Infrastructure Fund by $15m a year over 2016-17 and 2017-18 financial years and prioritise key regional boat ramp upgrades that the LNP has ignored.

A separate investigation into how a net- free area can be instituted in Moreton Bay through consultation with Recreational & Commercial fishers will be conducted in 2016.
